We use the internet to find a few of your local ham repeaters, along with some emergency frequencies such as sheriff, fire, ambulance or EMT, so you can listen on scan if those frequencies are within the bands and operating modes the radios will work on. We also leave room in between these groups so you can add more frequencies later. You can buy and listen without a license, but these are sold with the understanding that before you transmit you will be properly licensed on the band you intend to transmit on. We send an instruction sheet with the radios outlining your responsiblity in that regard, along with links to websites where you can get your GMRS license, and links to websites where you can study for your technician class amateur radio license. There is no test for the GMRS license. Just buy it from the FCC. The BTECH V1 listed below is the handheld we sell that is type accepted for GMRS. The tech class ham license is just a 35 question test in multiple choice format. You can get 9 answers wrong and still pass. You are given all the answers from a question pool up front, and the license is free. There will be a small fee for the test materials. Usually between $6 and $15 depending on your local ham club. My experience with this radio is that with power at 12V in, it puts our well over 50 watts, and with higher voltage up to 14.5v in, it puts out close to 70 watts measured on an RMS meter. The transmit clarity is excellent, and the radio remembers up to 758 channel settings for repeaters or simplex frequencies that are either wide or narrow spacing by channel in the program. The tone board is very useable either tx or rx but the receiver is a little more open or less selective than what I have been used to. My office has 3 computers running all the time, and I need to set the squelch a bit higher there (about 6) than I would like, but I don't miss any calls, monitering 6 repeaters and a bunch of emergency channels. Out on the road the squelch can be set at 2 which gives excellent sensitivity for weak signals. The built in top mounted speaker has lots of audio even in noisy environments. In a mobile it should be fine for just about any application. Overall I am very impressed with this very small compact and capable unit, and can recommend it for just about any business or ham application without reservation.
